Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions

Why won't my phone connect?

If you're on the same Wi-Fi, OpenDrop uses mDNS to discover your PC automatically. Some routers block mDNS, so if local discovery fails, the app falls back to the Cloudflare tunnel URL in the QR code. Try refreshing the QR code on the server, or make sure your firewall allows connections on port 8000.

Are my files secure?

Yes. Remote connections are encrypted with TLS 1.3 via Cloudflare Tunnels. Each session generates a unique secret key, and every request is signed with HMAC-SHA256 to prevent tampering. Files transfer directly between your devices and are never stored on any server.

What's the file size limit?

On the same Wi-Fi (LAN transfers), there's no file size limit. Files stream directly at your network's full speed. Over a Cloudflare tunnel, free users transfer in 5 MB chunks. Pro subscribers get binary streaming for files up to 10 GB.

Is there a mobile app?

Yes! OpenDrop is available on both Android (Google Play) and iOS (App Store). The desktop server runs on Windows and Linux. A macOS server version is in development.

How do I transfer photos from Android to PC wirelessly?

Open OpenDrop on your PC. It starts a local server and creates a secure tunnel automatically. Scan the QR code with the OpenDrop Android app. If both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, it connects directly over LAN for maximum speed. Pick your photos and tap send.

How is OpenDrop different from Snapdrop?

Snapdrop requires a WebRTC connection through a signaling server and only works in a browser. OpenDrop runs a native FastAPI server on your desktop with automatic LAN discovery (mDNS) and a Cloudflare tunnel for remote access. It works without any internet at all on the same Wi-Fi, and supports larger files, folder browsing, and native mobile apps.
