How to transfer files with OpenDrop

Three steps. No account, no cables and no port forwarding.

  1. Install it on your computer

    Get the Windows or Linux app. It starts a small local server, shows a QR code and connects to OpenDrop's encrypted relay on its own.

  2. Scan the code with your phone

    Open OpenDrop on your iPhone, iPad or Android phone and scan the code. That pairs the two.

  3. Send and browse

    Send files either way, or browse your computer's OpenDrop folder from your phone. OpenDrop picks the route for you.

Pro Sign in on each device instead of scanning, and your phones, tablets and computers connect to each other on their own.

OpenDrop tries each route in order and uses the first one that works. No port forwarding.

Questions about OpenDrop

Is there an AirDrop for Windows?

OpenDrop works like AirDrop between your phone and a Windows or Linux PC. Install the desktop app, scan its QR code with the OpenDrop app on your iPhone, iPad or Android phone, and send files either way over Wi-Fi or the internet. The free plan needs no account.

Is OpenDrop safe to use?

Yes. File contents are encrypted with ChaCha20-Poly1305 on your device before they are sent, over Wi-Fi, peer-to-peer, the relay or Bluetooth. Requests between your devices are signed with HMAC-SHA256. The relay carries only encrypted file data, though it can see file names and sizes.

Do I need an account?

No account on Free. Scan a QR code and start transferring. You only sign in to subscribe to Pro, with Google, Apple, Microsoft or email. The app sends a basic anonymous usage ping (a random install ID and the app version, nothing about your files), and you can turn it off in Settings.

Can I send files from iPhone to Android?

Yes, with OpenDrop Pro. Sign in to the same OpenDrop account on both phones and send between them over Wi-Fi or the internet. With no Wi-Fi or internet, two Pro phones can use Bluetooth Low Energy instead. Computers always connect over Wi-Fi or the internet. On Free, each phone sends to and from your computer.

Can I transfer files between two computers?

Yes, with OpenDrop Pro. Sign in on each Windows or Linux computer and they connect to each other through your account. Browse, send and move files between them.

How fast are free transfers?

On the same Wi-Fi, transfers run at full speed on both plans. Away from your Wi-Fi, free transfers are speed-limited, move in 5 MB pieces and share a weekly fair-use allowance on the free relay. Pro streams the whole file at full speed with no weekly limit. Neither plan has a file size cap, and a dropped connection picks up where it left off.

Is there a Mac version?

Not yet. A Mac version is in development for the Mac App Store, with no release date. Today OpenDrop runs on Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android.

Does OpenDrop have a command line?

Yes, on Windows and Linux. Use the desktop app, or run it headless with opendrop serve (add --background to detach). Commands find the OpenDrop running on the same computer. Commands that reach another device need Pro.

What do I need to run OpenDrop?

iPhone and iPad with iOS 16 or later. Android 7.0 or later. Windows 10 version 1809 or later, 64-bit. Linux x86_64 or ARM64 with glibc 2.35 or newer (Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36 or later).

Is OpenDrop by NFDGames related to other projects called OpenDrop?

No. OpenDrop by NFDGames is a file transfer app on the App Store, Google Play and the Microsoft Store, for Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android. The seemoo-lab/opendrop project on GitHub is a separate Python tool for Apple's AirDrop protocol, and GaudiLabs OpenDrop is a digital microfluidics platform. They only share a name.
